Maybe you're like me and can relate to a mind that sometimes seems to go absolutely nutters! You just can't stop thinking and overthinking and in the worst case your brain comes up with horror scenarios that are very unlikely to ever happen if we're being honest.
Well, I've been dealing with a super busy and hypervigilant mind and nervous system the majority of my life now. And good news is there are a few simple things that usually help to calm down.
What pretty much always does the trick for me is movement. And believe me, I'm not a sports person at all - but even slight movement does something to your brain to calm it down.
I remember when I was in high school about to graduate. My mind was going absolutely nuts full of worries and anxieties. At that time we had a treadmill at home. I would step on that damn thing pretty much every damn day and afterwards I always felt much much better. Also movement does wonders for studying afterwards, concentration and focus are much higher after a good dose of moving your body.
The combination of fresh air, sunshine and walking also does the trick. Just yesterday I felt very nervous and tensioned but after taking just a short walk to the lake nearby, sitting down in the sun for 15 minutes or so and then walking back home I felt so much better. Finally for the first time of the day I felt some kind of calm and inner peace - something that I had been missing before.
And to name one more thing that makes me feel better immediately: dancing! Literally shaking it off! Just put on your favorite music and start dancing in your kitchen of living room. I'm pretty sure you'll feel better just after doing this for a few minutes.
I remember when living in Argentina for a few months my best friend there and I would always dance together in the living room - especially on a Friday or Saturday night. With boozy drinks or without! What gave us relaxation was moving our body to awesome music!
So why does movement work so well? Because it interrupts the mental loop and brings you back into your body.
Which of these have you tried to calm your busy mind? And which ones work for you?
You don't have to do it all today. But if you try just one thing: then go outside for just 10 minutes!
With love,
Phyllis
