I'm on a babushka cheesecake diet 🎂

First of all - I don't diet. I don't believe in diets. My philosophy is just to eat proper food. Homemade food. Nourishing food. Food that doesn't come out of a box with a million questionable ingredients. Food that your great-grandparents would have recognized as food...

That's the real deal here. And with that my homemade babushka cheesecake falls into the nourishing food category. It's good ingredients - and it's crustless, so there's no extra burden on the digestive system with grains! Don't get me wrong, I am not anti-grains - but I get the feeling my body likes dairy much better.

And that's where my homemade cheesecake steps in. It's made solely from Quark (a dairy product a bit similar to Skyr that's widely eaten in Germany and nearby countries, in Eastern Europe it's obviously called Smetana or Twarog), eggs, sugar, vanilla sugar and I love throwing in some canned mandarins or peaches as well...

This cake is pure heaven! My friends, family and neighbors love it! Cause whenever I bake, I'm of course sharing it with my loved ones - sharing is caring as they say, right!

Basically I started my 'babushka cheesecake diet' whenever I realized I don't have much of an appetite. Yeah, unfortunately when I am stressed or depressed my appetite decides to break up with me and our ways part. And I stopped forcing myself to eat when I don't feel like eating. Because if I do, I start feeling even worse. Instead I started making peace with the kind of foods that my body can tolerate then. And one of them is my babushka cheesecake. No matter how bad I feel, I can still always eat a little piece of this magical cake.

So lately I have the palate of a 6 year old but I still manage it to eat nutrient-dense food - and the most important part is I feel good after eating them.

Here's a list of what I'm eating and drinking lately:

  • milk with collagen powder and instant coffee (warmed up of course)

  • I drink kefir or a mango lassi in the morning

  • fried eggs with mushrooms

  • scrambled eggs with creme fraiche on the side

  • fresh squeezed orange juice with sea salt

  • homemade babushka cheesecake

  • potato pancakes / latkes with creme fraiche and salt - and if I have, also lox

  • buttered noodles with tons of parmigiano cheese

  • and lately I even loved a thai coconut chicken curry with red bell peppers and zucchini - that I ate with thai rice noodles, that felt so good that I wanna cook it again soon.

You see, it is not a large list with food but still it's reasonable and it's nourishing.

I love food. I love cooking and baking. I love sharing. my food with loved ones. And the next step is that I want to start illustrating and painting food!

This is a reminder for you to treat yourself with kindness and love when it comes to food. Eat food that makes you feel well - physically and emotionally. And don't get dogmatic about it. Clearly I'm speaking from experience here since I have a sad history with anorexia and orthorexia. Therefore I'm even more grateful now that I started loving food again - but believe me it took a while.

With lots of love,

Phyllis
